Lewandowski back in Barcelona after Chicago Fire talks as future still undecided

Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona star

When Robert Lewandowski announced that he would be leaving Barcelona at the end of the 2025/26 season, it felt like a chapter coming to an end.

The Pole may have spent only four seasons at the Catalan club, but the circumstances under which he came and the way he played helped him go down as one of the best number nines to have worn the Blaugrana shirt.

Naturally, there is anticipation about where Lewandowski will go next upon the expiry of his Barça contract.

He spent last weekend in the United States, where he held talks with Chicago Fire over a possible move.

Now, according to SPORT, the veteran striker landed in Barcelona on Monday after visiting Chicago to see the club’s facilities, learn about the project and get a better feel for a city that could become his next destination.

Lewandowski has not made a final decision about his future yet.

The Chicago Fire proposal is a genuine option on the table. They are said to be offering a major contract of between two and three years, with earnings close to $20 million per season.

For a player at this stage of his career, that is a powerful proposal, especially when combined with the chance to be the face of an MLS project.

Gregg Berhalter is reportedly the main driver behind the move. The Chicago coach has made clear his admiration for Lewandowski and used the meetings to explain the role he would have in the team, the ambition of the project and the club’s desire to compete for titles.

A striker who still has it at the highest level

Most players around the world would not have the courage to join a club like Barcelona at that age, as Lewandowski did.

Perhaps what is even more remarkable is the fact that he spent three relatively injury-free seasons at the Catalan club.

It was only in his final season that availability became a question mark. Even then, despite his body showing signs of slowing down, the finishing was still very much there.

A move to MLS could help the 37-year-old striker in this regard. The intensity is unlikely to be the same, and he can still contribute to Chicago Fire for a couple of seasons.

While his exit from Barça is confirmed, fans are eager to know where they can see the Pole play next season, and it remains to be seen whether he gives his nod to the MLS club or looks at other options.
