Deco meets Barcelona veteran’s agent as club considers contract extension

Andreas Christensen of Barcelona

Barcelona have reportedly taken the first step towards addressing the future of Andreas Christensen.

According to a recent report from SPORT, Barcelona sporting director Deco recently met with the defender’s agent to discuss the possibility of extending Christensen’s stay at the club.

The meeting took place between Deco and the player’s representative, Simon Oliveira, who travelled to hold discussions with the Barcelona hierarchy.

During the conversation, the club’s sporting director presented an initial idea regarding the Danish centre-back’s future.

What’s the story?

Barcelona are currently considering offering Christensen a one-year contract extension, although the proposed deal would involve a reduction in his salary compared to his current agreement.

From the club’s perspective, the proposal is part of a broader financial strategy.

Barcelona are still carefully managing their wage structure as they continue working within the financial framework imposed by La Liga.

Extending Christensen’s contract with adjusted terms would allow the club to spread its financial commitments more effectively and free up valuable salary space.

However, the move is not purely financial, as the sporting department still values Christensen’s contribution when he is available.

A turn in fortune

Meanwhile, injuries have been a recurring issue for Christensen.

The defender has missed several matches during his time in Spain, and those setbacks have raised concerns inside the club about his long-term availability.

Because of Barcelona’s financial difficulties, the club even considered letting the defender leave last summer. At that point, selling the player could have helped ease the wage bill and generate some income.

However, the situation did not progress further. Christensen had no intention of leaving Barcelona, and the coaching staff were not eager to push him out either.

Now the conversation has shifted towards a possible renewal instead.

It is said that the discussions remain at an early stage. No final agreement has been reached yet, but the recent meeting is a first step in understanding whether both sides are willing to move forward with the proposal.
