Unbeaten for nearly two decades: Barcelona’s tremendous away record vs Real Betis

FC Barcelona lock horns with Real Betis away at Estadio de La Cartuja tomorrow in Matchday 9 of the 2026/27 La Liga.

The Catalans are the most in-form team in Europe, having won each of their eight league games this term, along with two in the UEFA Champions League.

Odds stacked in favour of Barcelona

And, heading into tomorrow’s contest against Manuel Pellegrini’s side in Seville, Barcelona have the edge once again, thanks to their away record against the Verdiblancos.

Indeed, if there is one stadium where Barcelona regularly feel at home, it is the ground of Real Betis.

Whether playing at the Ruiz de Lopera, Benito Villamarin or, more recently, La Cartuja, the Catalan giants have consistently enjoyed success on their visits to the Andalusian club.

Barça have now gone more than 18 years without an away defeat against Betis, recording 11 wins and four draws, scoring 39 goals and conceding just 21 during that run.

To find their last defeat against Betis in Seville, one must go back to 29 March 2008. On that occasion, the Verdiblancos recovered from a two-goal deficit to win 3-2.

Since then, Barcelona have enjoyed a remarkable run of results away to Real Betis, including emphatic victories such as a 5-0 win in the 2017/18 season and a 4-1 triumph in the 2013/14 campaign.

Under Flick, Barcelona have maintained their strong away record at Real Betis. The German coach has overseen one victory, a thrilling 5-3 win last season, and one draw, a 2-2 result during his first campaign in charge.

Interestingly, the Blaugrana have found their home meetings with Betis more difficult. Five seasons ago, when Xavi was in charge, the Catalans suffered a 1-0 defeat. They also lost 4-3 at home during the 2018/19 season.

Despite those setbacks at home, Barcelona’s record in Seville remains a source of confidence ahead of their next meeting.

Barcelona chase a historic La Liga start

The Catalans have another incentive heading into the match: the chance to record the best start to a La Liga season in the club’s history.

Barcelona have won their first eight league matches, matching the achievement of Tata Martino’s side in the 2013/14 campaign. A ninth consecutive victory would set a new club record.

It would also draw them level with the best start to a LaLiga season achieved by any team. Real Madrid currently hold that record, having won their opening nine matches in the 1968/69 campaign under Miguel Munoz.

Victory over Real Betis would therefore allow Flick’s side to make history while extending a remarkable unbeaten run at one of their most favourable away grounds.
