Sergio Busquets has backed Barcelona to end their long wait for Champions League glory, confident that Hansi Flick has assembled a squad capable of going all the way this season.
Busquets, now working as Juliano Belletti’s assistant with Barcelona’s reserve side, remains closely connected to the club and is clearly encouraged by what he has seen from Flick’s team.
Barça have not lifted the European Cup since 2015, and the former midfielder would love to see that drought finally come to an end.
Busquets sees Barça with genuine Champions League potential
Busquets’ optimism comes with an important caveat: the campaign is still in its early stages. Yet his assessment is clear.
He believes Flick has both the coaching ability and the quality of players required to make Barcelona serious contenders for the Champions League trophy.
“I really hope so! We’re all very happy and excited. There’s still a long way to go; the season has only just begun.
“But Barça have a great manager and so many great players, so why not? I hope we can do it,” he said, as per Mundo Deportivo.
Cesc Fabregas earns special praise
Notably, his attention is not limited to Catalonia, either.
Asked which Serie A team he has enjoyed watching most, Busquets immediately picked Como, where his former Barcelona teammate Cesc Fabregas is now in charge.
Como announced themselves impressively in the Champions League with a 4–1 victory over RB Leipzig, while Busquets believes their progress under Fabregas deserves recognition beyond the obvious personal connection.
“Como is one of my favourites, not just because of Cesc, but because of the players. Last year was historic and I hope they do really well,” he said.
“With the manager they have and their approach, if they stick to the same line, they’re sure to give the competition a run for their money.
“The new Champions League format gives teams like that a chance, and they’re sure to be in the mix,” he added.
Could Fabregas eventually return to Barcelona?
Busquets also opened the door to a tantalising possibility that Fabregas could one day succeed Flick at Barcelona.
“Great managers can manage great teams; I think Cesc is well on his way to doing that.
“I don’t know if it will actually happen, or if he’ll want to, but if things continue as they are, it might well happen, of course,” he concluded.
