Barcelona have completed the signing of 16-year-old attacking talent Dany Freire, with Fabrizio Romano giving his trademark ‘Here We Go’ to the move.
The Portuguese-Luxembourgish youngster passed his trial with Barcelona and is signing his contract with the club today, with the remaining formalities now set to be completed.
Born in Lisbon on 19 September 2010, Freire moved to Luxembourg at a young age and developed his football at Racing FC Union Letzebuerg.
He holds both Portuguese and Luxembourgish nationality and has represented Portugal at youth level after previously featuring for Luxembourg.
Barcelona move for versatile attacking talent
As such, Freire’s versatility was one of the qualities that caught Barcelona’s attention.
He can operate as an attacking midfielder, on the left wing or through the middle as a centre-forward, giving him several routes into the attacking positions.
Barcelona had already identified the teenager during his time with Racing Union, where he impressed in Luxembourg’s youth competitions.
His performances in the UEFA Youth League and domestic cup football helped put him on the club’s radar before he was invited to join Barcelona’s summer training camps.
Furthermore, his trial period with the Juvenil B side then strengthened the club’s interest. Freire scored on his debut in a pre-season friendly against CF Badalona and continued to attract attention during the summer tournaments.
Freire impressed Barcelona after trial spell
The teenager scored three goals during the summer competitions, collected an MVP award and was part of the Barcelona side that defeated Real Madrid in a youth Clasico.
Those displays convinced the coaching staff working under Juvenil B coach Cesc Bosch that Freire was worth pursuing on a permanent basis.
The timing of the agreement was also dictated by FIFA regulations. As a non-Spanish player, Freire could not formally sign for Barcelona before turning 16.
That restriction has now been removed with his birthday, allowing Barcelona to complete the administrative steps and formalise the agreement.
Freire is expected to begin his Barcelona career with Juvenil B, where he will continue his development after making a strong impression during his trial.
