Cesc Fabregas has been left seriously impressed by Barcelona’s current level under Hansi Flick, describing the Blaugrana’s performances as “frightening” ahead of their eventual Champions League meeting with his Como side.
Fabregas, who came through Barcelona’s academy and later played for the first team, watched Barça’s recent European victory over Feyenoord and highlighted their ability to escape almost any tactical problem thrown at them.
Fabregas impressed by Barcelona’s solutions
The Como manager was speaking after his own team made an emphatic start to their Champions League campaign, beating Leipzig 4–1 in a statement result on their European debut.
Barcelona’s ability to find answers regardless of the opposition’s approach stood out most to Fabregas.
“I watched Barça’s match yesterday and I can tell you that Feyenoord are a very good side, but the thing is, Barça make you look bad because they find a way out of every situation at all times.
“You can mark them man-to-man, as they tried with Rodri or Pedri, but they find solutions from all angles.
“Whoever plays, they’re of a very high standard. It’s frightening – the level they’re playing at right now is frightening,” he said, as per Mundo Deportivo.
Como prepare for a different kind of challenge
Fabregas also stressed the importance of tactical flexibility when competing at Champions League level.
“In today’s football, you have to be prepared for anything. To be a complete team, you have to excel in many areas.
“There are mini-matches within the matches and you have to know how to deal with certain situations, especially at these levels.
“There are matches you can win by playing the same way throughout, and there are others where you have to know how to handle certain moments, especially at these levels which we’re not used to,” added Fabregas.
That adaptability will be particularly important when Como eventually face Barcelona.
Barcelona and Como set for Camp Nou meeting
The two teams are scheduled to meet in the final league phase of the Champions League season, with Barcelona hosting Como at Spotify Camp Nou on January 27.
For Fabregas, it will be a return to a stadium where he enjoyed a formative chapter of his playing career. This time, though, he will arrive in the opposition dugout.
His praise also offers an early indication of the respect Barcelona command from a manager who knows the club intimately.
Como’s impressive European start has shown they cannot be dismissed, but facing Flick’s Barcelona will provide a significantly different tactical test.
