Raphinha 10, Fermin 9 | Elche 0-5 Barcelona: Player Ratings

Barcelona’s first game of the new season could not have gone any better, and for all the talk of the pressing need for a new striker, goals were not the problem for the Catalans.

Hansi Flick rested most of his recently returned stars from the starting lineup and fielded an academy-graduate-rich setup with the likes of Xavi Espart and Marc Bernal earning starts.

In just the first half, the team went 2-0 up through Raphinha and Karim Adeyemi, and as more regulars returned after the break, their dominance grew.

The Brazilian talisman scored a second and Fermin Lopez made it 4-0 soon after, capping off a sensational win in the team’s matchday 2 clash.

Barça Universal brings you the player ratings from Elche 0-5 Barcelona.

Joan Garcia: 7.5

The Barcelona goalkeeper had a very solid game, albeit with little to do from a goalkeeping standpoint. Garcia did not have to make any saves throughout the first-half and was efficient with his distribution, all while also making four recoveries.

Had a busier second half and was called into action on occasion. Did well to retain the clean sheet.

Eric Garcia: 8.5

Garcia started at right-back in Barcelona’s first game of the new season, giving an indication that he will be used as a regular right-back this season alongside Jules Kounde.

On that front, the player had a solid game defensively and even made a last-ditch clearance to deny what would have been a clear-cut equaliser in the first-half. His attacking contributions, however, remain a facet he must work on.

Andreas Christensen: 8

Christensen started as the leader in defence and looked rather comfortable playing in the high line despite not being a regular starter in recent seasons.

The Danish star showed no signs of discomfort from his recent injury and stepped up with important clearances and a great passing accuracy. At half-time, in fact, he had not miscued a single pass.

Gerard Martin: 8

Martin started in central defence and continued to show why Hansi Flick rates him so highly as a defender.

The Spaniard showed great composure in defence and has clearly improved a lot playing as a central defender. His positioning was perfect, distribution remained solid and his defensive contributions were all well-weighed.

Xavi Espart: 8.5

Given all the uncertainty around Alejandro Balde’s future and his exclusion from the squad, Xavi Espart started as a makeshift left-back last night. After all, even Joao Cancelo is not yet fit to start.

Despite playing out of position, he was one of Barcelona’s best performers at the back against Elche and was regularly involved in the buildup play with minimal mistakes. He made crucial defensive interventions and linked up well with Raphinha and Adeyemi.

Provided the assist for the team’s fifth goal on the night, scored by Fermin Lopez.

Gavi: 7

Gavi started Barcelona’s first game of the new season and did well in the first half to add intensity to the team’s press. Unfortunately, however, his night was cut short through injury once more.

Just when it appeared that the player was past his fitness woes, the youngster went down in pain in the same knee that has troubled him over the years and left the field distraught. Barcelona will hope he has not suffered any serious relapse.

Marc Bernal: 7.5

With most usual midfield mainstays still not ready to start, Bernal was handed the start in Barcelona’s double pivot alongside Gavi and did well to maintain control in midfield.

The young midfielder was calm in possession, reliable with his distribution and central to the team’s buildup. His contribution in the press was impressive and he often looked to set the forwards free with smart turns and passes.

Fermin Lopez: 9

Fermin scored a special brace.

Fermin was deployed as the attacking midfielder against Elche and constantly looked to set the forwards ahead of him free into attacking spaces.

He created the chance that ended up in a penalty by setting Raphinha free in the box and had his eyes on all three forwards to set up a lethal counter-attack. Surprisingly, however, the player himself did not get too close to goal often.

Added his first goal of the season to his kitty in the second half off an Anthony Gordon assist to make it 4-0 and then completed his brace to add the icing to the cake.

Lamine Yamal: 7.5

Yamal had a relatively silent first half as the player looked to manage his workload and take it slow on his first start back for Barcelona.

He did not make any bursts of pace or attempt audacious dribbles and just looked to nail the basics of the game. As the game progressed, he slowly unfurled his wings to a limited capacity with some great passes.

Raphinha: 10

A captain’s performance.

The Brazilian star’s energy was a highlight throughout the game as he pressed relentlessly as Barcelona’s centre-forward to put pressure on Elche’s defensive line.

On this occasion, Raphinha looked comfortable in the number nine position in terms of getting into good positions in front of goal, and he won the penalty that he eventually converted with ease to put the team ahead.

The new first captain also provided the assist for Adeyemi’s goal late in the first-half and established himself as Barcelona’s best and most influential player on the night. Even scored a brilliant second-half goal to complete his brace.

Karim Adeyemi: 9

Adeyemi made his official debut as a Barcelona player right from the get-go as Hansi Flick handed him a start on the left wing against Elche last night.

After Raphinha, the new signing was perhaps the team’s most important threat at Estadio Martinez Valero.

Adeyemi looked surprisingly comfortable in the buildup phase and his pace was terrifying for Elche’s defence on the break. His finish for the goal was also picture-perfect, showing what a lethal finisher he can be. An impressive debut.

Pedri: 9

Pedri’s arrival shifted the possession dynamics and instantly made Barcelona look more dominant on the ball. The buildup began to flow smoothly and the player once again showed why he is indispensable.

Anthony Gordon: 8.5

Gordon came on in the second half to replace Lamine Yamal and provided a great assist for Raphinha’s second goal within minutes.

Just four minutes later, he racked up his second assist to Fermin Lopez from a position where he could well have scored. A very promising debut.
