Spain wrapped up their FIFA World Cup group-stage campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Uruguay, but the scoreline only tells part of the story.

The match was played at a frantic pace, filled with heavy challenges, heated moments and plenty of tension, with Barcelona midfielder Pedri once again emerging as one of Spain’s standout performers.

The result secured top spot for Spain and ensured they head into the Round of 32 with one of their most important players available for the knockout stages.

A physically demanding match

Spain were forced to battle throughout the encounter as Uruguay adopted a physical approach from the outset.

Challenges flew in from all directions and several tackles crossed the line, making it an uncomfortable evening for Luis de la Fuente’s side.

Quite particularly, a certain Agustin Canobbio was involved in several controversial moments.

The Uruguayan first escaped punishment after a strong tackle on Pedri before later producing an even more dangerous challenge on Pau Cubarsi that could easily have caused serious damage.

As frustrations continued to rise, his night eventually ended with a red card.

Pedri’s masterclass vs Uruguay

Despite the aggressive treatment, Pedri remained calm and influential in possession.

The Barcelona midfielder dictated the rhythm of Spain’s attacks, constantly offering passing options and helping his side maintain control during difficult spells.

In just 59 minutes on the pitch, Pedri registered one key pass, completed 43 passes from 63 touches, won seven duels and contributed four defensive actions.

He also maintained a perfect success rate with his long balls, showing the all-round quality of his performance.

It was another reminder of why the Barcelona star has become such an important figure for both club and country.

Notably, there was pressure surrounding Pedri heading into the Uruguay clash.

The midfielder was carrying a yellow card, and another booking would have ruled him out of Spain’s Round of 32 encounter.

Under FIFA regulations, players who collect two yellow cards during the same phase of the tournament must serve a one-match suspension.

But despite the nature of the match, Pedri handled the situation perfectly.

Even while competing in a fiercely contested midfield battle, the 23-year-old avoided unnecessary risks and managed to stay out of the referee’s notebook.

His substitution after 59 minutes ensured he completed the night without incident, allowing Spain to move into the knockout stages with their midfield orchestrator fully available.
