Chicago Fire have publicly confirmed their desire to sign the exit-bound Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski, with manager Gregg Berhalter openly discussing the situation.
The comments have immediately intensified speculation surrounding Lewandowski’s next destination, especially after months of rumours linking him with a possible move away from European football.
Berhalter made it very clear that Chicago Fire are serious about bringing the former Barcelona striker to Major League Soccer.
Now that Lewandowski has officially ended his time in Spain, the American coach appeared comfortable speaking publicly about the negotiations.
“I can speak freely because he is no longer a Barcelona player and he is someone we want to sign,” he said.
In talks since December
The Chicago Fire manager also confirmed that discussions between the club and Lewandowski’s camp have been ongoing for several months.
According to reports, initial contact dates back to December, although the striker’s representatives have also spoken with multiple other clubs.
“We have spoken to Robert Lewandowski and his entourage.
“First of all, I don’t think there are no other offers. I find that hard to believe. I’m sure a player of his calibre must have offers.
“As for our communication, we’ve had plenty. Both with him and with his entourage.”
A marquee signing for MLS
Chicago Fire are clearly viewing the potential transfer as far more than just a football signing.
The club believe Lewandowski’s arrival could have a major impact commercially, culturally, and competitively, particularly given the strong Polish community in Chicago.
“We believe that the Polish community, and not only that, but the whole of the Chicago community, supports this transfer.
“We believe it is a fantastic signing for the club, the city and the league.”
The former US national team coach also highlighted the sporting benefits that Lewandowski could bring to the squad.
He believes that “a player of such high calibre can only strengthen our team and its potential.
“We already have a very strong attacking side, and his arrival can only make us even stronger,” he concluded.
